Kim Hiorthoy
Kim Hiorthoy is a graphic designer/Illustrator/film director/musician/writer that was born in Norway in 1973. He studied at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art (1991–96) as well as the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1999-2000).
His digital art include a extended range of graphics that involve rhythms because music background. His music is part of his graphic designs. He values both music and digital art as two different ways to express his creativeness because he believes they both are part of one another. His digital creations are all really spontaneous and he enjoys making illustrations to please his needs and not the audience.
He was introduced to the graphic design world when he was asked to design record sleeves for a local rock band. Kim does not believe in inspiration, and he claims he does not need it to make his creations.
I think that Kim does get inspired by music because most of his work relates to it. His graphics show movement and motion. In my case, I get inspiration from many things but one of the biggest things I easily get inspired is Dance which relates to Kim’s movement and motion graphic designs. Kim does not use much color in his works. He pretty much sticks to shades of grays, purples and blacks. This could be one of the differences that I have with him because I tend to use a lot of color in my graphics.
In a 2004 interview with KultureFlash.com, Hiorthøy described the relationship between graphic design and music: “I regard them as very different things, even though the place in my head that decides if something works or not is the same for both”
Kim’s work is a combination of arts that he enjoys to work with. He takes advantage of all his skills to accomplish great work. If we could all get all our talent together and mix it up in a blender we could end up having as much fun as he does.
